August, 2007 - Monsters In Mittens featured on Mini Fashionista

I was going through some old photos the other day when I found this one of me as a baby. It got me all nostalgic about the 60’s and 70’s - the way that granny (or nanna in my case) would knit up some booties, a nice little cardi or a bonnet for the new baby.

In today’s busy world you just don’t see that anymore.

That is until now - We’re proud to introduce the Monsters in Mittens Collection, hand-knitted vintage-inspired pieces made using 100% New Zealand Merino wool. Monsters in Mittens have created a very special collection that is just right for baby’s first years. All lovingly hand-crafted in New Zealand, by ‘real’ grannies. You’ll fall in love with the beautiful workmanship, and darling designs. They’re heirlooms for the modern-day child!

Around this time of year you remember that you really wished you had listened more closely to Nana as she click-clacked her way through another pure wool jumper/bonnet/bootie, explaining the art of knitting to you all before her 6pm nip of brandy.>

Oh well, you can't be good at everything. Mind you, just because you missed out on the knitting gene, and Nana is now a star in the night sky, doesn't mean your baby can't be wrapped in pure wool.

Monsters in Mittens has a team of Nanas who produce the most beautiful baby and toddler goods, blankets and dresses, all hand made using organic merino wool from the south island of New Zealand, and take inspiration from knitting patterns from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Bless.

Psst...Pass It On

While there's no shortage of layettes out there for sale, I'm always on the lookout for items that are worthy of being handed down through the generations. When this year's mass-produced designs look just like last year's mass-produced designs, they simply aren't worth my money or precious closet space.

But a gorgeous layette from Monsters in Mittens is truly special. These vintage inspired, hand knitted Merino wool clothes and accessories come from New Zealand, where so much stunning baby stuff seems to originate these days.

I'm partial to the Pixie Hat, the old fashioned Skull Cap (shown here)and the Mary Jane Booties which are are so beautiful that a mom will keep them around until she's got grandkids to give them a second wearing. (And the square stitched blankie? This is the stuff that makes ovaries hurt.)

Go stock up on underbed chests and cedar blocks before you click through. Trust me. -Julie

MonsterinMittens is a New Zealand based company, which specializes in producing hand knitted merino baby clothing in vintage styles with a classic twist. Tracy and Emma are the founders and they employ a collective of handknitters throughout NZ and only use NZ Merino wool including their beautiful soft organic merino wool which is perfect for baby's first woolen garment. I truly love these blankets...if I would be pregnant again…Here you can view and buy their collection.
